Commercial Design
Based in Eugene, Oregon, Aligned Architecture designs restaurants and breweries, medical and professional offices, boutique hotels and resorts, retail stores, and mixed-use buildings in Oregon and California.
What is Commercial Design?
Commercial design covers buildings and interior spaces for businesses, from new construction to renovations and tenant improvements within existing buildings.
Our Approach to Commercial Design
Much of our commercial work is interior tenant improvements, shaping office, clinic, and studio spaces to accommodate each tenant’s operations within an existing building. We’ve also turned a former tractor-sales warehouse into a brewpub, an aging industrial building into an eyewear lab and retail store, a century-old downtown building into daylit law offices, and a 1959 motel into a boutique inn.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a residential architect and a commercial architect?
A residential architect designs homes, while a commercial architect designs buildings and spaces used for business purposes, such as offices, restaurants, retail stores, and medical clinics, which typically carry additional code requirements around occupancy, accessibility, and life safety. Aligned Architecture provides both residential and commercial architecture services.
Does Aligned Architecture design tenant improvements, or only ground-up commercial buildings?
Both. A significant part of our commercial work is tenant improvement design within existing buildings, shaping individual spaces to fit each business. We also take on full building renovations and new commercial construction.
Does Aligned Architecture work on renovations of existing commercial buildings?
Yes. Adaptive reuse and building rehabilitation are a core part of our commercial practice.
What types of commercial clients does Aligned Architecture work with?
Our commercial clients include hospitality businesses such as motels, resorts, restaurants and breweries, healthcare providers, professional offices, nonprofit organizations, and retail businesses, along with property owners and developers of mixed-use buildings.
Where does Aligned Architecture provide commercial architecture services?
Our commercial work is based primarily in Oregon, spanning from Eugene and the Willamette Valley to more remote parts of the state, such as an artist retreat campus in Summer Lake. We’ve also designed commercial projects farther afield, including a clubhouse renovation for a retirement community in Calistoga, California. If you’re located elsewhere, reach out to discuss your project.
