SWEEP Optical

This 14,000-square-foot, two-story renovation reimagines an aging, non-descript industrial building into a vibrant mixed-use hub for SWEEP Optical, a division of Laurel Hill Center. The project establishes a new home for SWEEP Optical, Oregon’s primary contracted ophthalmic laboratory for the state, while reinforcing its dual mission of high-quality optical production and meaningful, rewarding employment for people with physical, mental, and developmental disabilities.

Facing one of Eugene’s primary entry corridors, the building’s public presence is anchored by a new eyewear retail store that engages the street and invites the community inside. The retail environment features refined interior detailing, an elegant lobby and reception area, wood ceiling clouds, custom display cases, and carefully selected lighting that elevates the customer experience and reflects the quality of the products within.

Behind the scenes, the building supports a diverse mix of functions. Three independent administrative office suites with dedicated entries are organized around shared amenities, including breakrooms, kitchenettes, and restrooms. The rear of the building houses a specialized, state-of-the-art eyewear fabrication workshop designed to support efficient workflows and hands-on training opportunities for employees.

The project included comprehensive upgrades to all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, as well as new finishes and fixtures throughout, ensuring the facility will serve SWEEP Optical for decades to come. Sustainable strategies were integrated into the design, including a large rooftop solar array for onsite power generation and enhanced daylighting through new windows and skylights.
An existing unpermitted loft required detailed code analysis and resolution, resulting in the addition of new structural elements, fire separations, and a carefully choreographed egress strategy to meet current life-safety standards.

As a revenue-generating enterprise, SWEEP Optical plays a critical role in supporting Laurel Hill Center’s broader mission. Founded in 1972, Laurel Hill Center provides nationally recognized psychiatric rehabilitation services to approximately 500 adults each year. Proceeds from optical sales directly fund essential programs, including housing, health and wellness services, employment support, and community-based learning. This project aligns architecture with purpose—creating a dignified, functional, and sustainable workplace that strengthens both business operations and community impact.
